This startling, thought-provoking drama by Steven Dietz is sure to leave audiences questioning everything they know, or think they know! When a mysterious stranger walks into a New York City tavern and orders two beers, one for himself and one for his absent friend, what seems like the beginning of a barroom joke quickly becomes a sobering descent into the dark corners of urban legend, and America’s obsession with conspiracy theories. From Apollo 11 astronauts landing on the moon, to 9/11 hijacker’s crashing into the World Trade Center, Dietz cunningly draws us into that vague middle ground between fact and fiction, weaving a tale that is at once chilling, disconcerting, and ultimately mind-bending. Taking a cue from John Patrick Shanley’s play, Doubt, Dietz’s Yankee Tavern is a not a study of cold, hard fact, but a meditation on the agonizing nature of uncertainty. “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.” Really?
