Set in a tiny village in the lonesome west of Ireland, this wickedly dark comedy tells the tale of a virginal spinster and her manipulative elderly mother. Trapped by circumstance in a country cottage in which mutual loathing is as potent as Irish whiskey, Maureen Folan is in desperate need of a break from the daily grind of caring for Mag. But when a chance romantic encounter with a local man offers Maureen the possibility of permanent escape, Mag does everything in her power to stop her daughter dead in her tracks. What ensues is a masterfully conceived cat-and-mouse game that builds to a shocking and absolutely riveting climax! Menacing yet moving, harrowing yet hilarious, The Beauty Queen of Leenane is a superbly crafted play, exuding a bold and brutal lyricism that is nothing short of hypnotic!
