Play information:
Shakespeare’s captivating exploration of love, betrayal, jealousy, and revenge focuses upon the tragic downfall of a courageous warrior; a man able to conquer whole armies, yet unable to rule his own heart. While Othello is successful in leading the Venetian forces against the Turkish foe, his greatest enemy lies within his own ranks. Iago, one of Othello’s trusted soldiers and one of the most diabolical characters that Shakespeare ever penned, is enraged at being passed over for promotion, and is determined to exact a calculating and brutal revenge. Using his own festering jealously as a weapon to poison the hearts and minds of all around him, Iago develops a plan of attack that will not only win him the position he seeks, but destroy Othello in the process. Set in the Renaissance, but belonging to the ages, Othello is one of Shakespeare’s most revealing and personal tragedies; a towering and heartbreaking saga of a man who “loved not wisely, but too well.”
